English 원문
A stack of worksheet packets, a metal three-hole punch, and a box of dull pencils crowded the shared desk near the window. Otto pressed his palm against the punch’s cool lever and aimed to finish every packet before the next bell. Shoulder muscles tightened as the lever moved only halfway; the punch heads refused to cut through the thick sheets. He separated the pile, tried again, and the lever halted with the same heavy click. Helena, three desks away, kept arranging cardboard dividers and did not glance up while paper edges shifted under Otto’s fingers. The corridor clock kept ticking toward the change of period, yet the mediation request forms inside the packets still waited for their holes, each sheet showing a printed midnight deadline that meant nothing to the bell rhythm now.
Otto slid the jammed punch aside, lifted one packet, and carried it toward the doorway where brighter corridor light fell across the paper. Under this light the blue guideline, almost black inside the supply closet earlier, turned clear again, showing the proper margin. If he had kept forcing the stiff lever, the metal punchers would have bent out of shape. He decided to improvise. Using a dull pencil tip, he marked a fresh measure on the top sheet, then tapped the packet’s spine against the desk until every page aligned with the mark. The first press of the lever cut smoothly; pages swayed apart in three neat arcs. The simple movement teased warmth into his forearms, and tension drifted away as he repeated the sequence for the next bundle.
Two minutes later tidy stacks leaned against the window frame, ready for Helena to bind. From a distance the rows of evenly spaced holes looked like an ingenious solution created by specialized machinery, not by a quick change of posture and a pencil point. Otto gathered the empty pencil box, turned toward the supply closet to return it, and the bell rang over his steps. Behind him, the last packet he punched sagged slightly, one corner slipping off the desk until the freshly cut holes rested against the polished floor.
