English 원문
Every afternoon the carousel carried Delia through the same slow circle, yet today a starling darted beneath the painted canopy, landing on the brass ring arm. It hopped twice, cocked its charcoal head, and pecked at bright crumbs that clung to the fluted metal.
Delia’s gloved fingers slid along the warm brass pole; the rise of her carved horse timed her reach toward the dispenser. A puddle of melted candy and sawdust near the platform edge had thickened into a miniature quagmire, and each rotation slung a sweet film onto the ring arm. The starling, wings restless with tiny shivers, found the tacky glaze perfect for its beak. "Leave him a taste," Ulric called from the next horse, his boot heel squeaking against chipped paint. She aimed a smile in reply but did not broach the question of who deserved the ring first.
Hardly had the organ’s march begun its second strain when her hand brushed the bird’s tail feathers and the creature lifted, only to settle again a span away. The grinder’s rasp from the repair shed—some mechanic shaping bolts against a distant grindstone—filtered through the music, masking the faint click that signaled the arm’s return. Delia reached sooner than she intended; the sugary film gripped the ring so firmly that the brass refused to slide free, and her tug rocked the starling’s perch. The bird flared once, a blur of slate and umber, then planted its claws deeper, as though the carousel were a branch that could not bend.
Her left boot damp with syrup, Delia paused mid-rise, weighing ring against bird. What stopped her was the sight of a straw-thin thread stuck to the starling’s beak; the creature was gathering adhesive, not food. As the platform dipped, she loosened her grip, allowing the ring to remain while the starling worried the thread free. Only then did she notice a second ring trapped beneath the first, its edge dulled by grit yet turning faintly in the sticky glaze. A compromise formed at the speed of a breath: she steadied the lower ring with one fingertip, freed it with a soft twist, and let the upper stay for the bird.
Ulric lifted an eyebrow when she passed him the freed circle. "For you," she said, nothing more. The starling launched, sugar thread trailing like spun glass, and vanished beyond the canopy murals. Delia rested her open hand beside the starling on the brass ring arm.
