English 원문
No second pair of boots waited beside the threshold when Harriet pushed the greenhouse door inward. Warm, damp air curled around her ankles, carrying peat sweetness and the faint metallic note of watering cans drying on the bench. The room was so familiar her muscles predicted every reach, yet the stone floor bore arcs of grit she did not remember sweeping. Seldom had the panes looked so cloudy; beads gathered, linked, and dropped, leaving a shining rivulet that slid along the iron frame into the gutter. She set her rucksack on the vacated stool, fingertips grazing the rough seat as though testing whether the wood still recognized her weight.
A clipped rustle answered from behind the tomato vines, and Yorick emerged, secateurs dangling, a looping bramble cutting hooked over one wrist. "Morning," he whispered, careful not to disturb the hush enclosed by glass. Harriet replied, then had to swallow before another word passed her throat, for the empty stretch of bench beside them jarred her sense of order. If the trays were lined as always, the gap would lie hidden, yet the darker rectangle stared back like a door left ajar. She moved toward it as though the floor were cracked glass, while Yorick lingered by the vines, rotating the bramble between gloved fingertips.
What caught her eye was a pale outline, oval and precise, where a pot had rested for years; its departure left powdery moss shaped like a forgotten coaster. Her fingers still damp, she hovered above the ring, then withdrew without touching. A droplet slipped from a leaf onto her knuckle, and she fumbled the gesture, water spotting the dust in uneven circles. Only then did Yorick step closer; his secateurs clicked shut, yet he offered neither question nor answer. Outside, a breeze eased the ridge vent wider, and a dry blade of air slipped through, flattening the humidity around their shoulders.
Harriet straightened, lifted the watering can, and let a thin stream darken soil beneath the vines; nothing flowed into the vacant ring. The air cooled a handful of degrees, enough to ripple condensation on the panes, yet she left the vent wider than usual before easing the crank back. Yorick hung the bramble on a peg where it drooped like a modest question mark. Without a word, they stepped toward the door; Harriet closed it only halfway, and a ribbon of outside light rested on the empty stool.
