Hardly had Yara aligned the ROV’s last depth mark when the odd tableau drifted into her focus between joystick movements. She paused, pencil tip hanging above the clipboard, while the cable drum murmured and the seafloor image lagged one breath behind her hand. The crab flexed its legs against the nylon surface, yet the mug remained perfectly still, as though an invisible tide held both in place on the humming console. The scent of tomato soup drifting from the station bistro never reached her nose until that moment.

A sudden clang from the corridor door swung her chair sideways; Valda’s boot had clipped the metal threshold and sent the clipboard skittering across the tiles. Yara set the joystick down and reached after the escaping sheet. The crab startled, sliding toward the edge of the console as the spool clicked and halted the tether. Valda stretched both hands, yet Yara's outstretched arms reached first; she cupped the inverted mug over the restless creature and lifted the wobbling arrangement clear of the electronics. When she returned two minutes later, the lamp beam on the main screen rested on pale sediment ribbed like ploughed acreage. Her palms damp, Yara reclaimed the joystick, but the delay felt longer, its rhythm loosened, as though the ocean were glass and each command waited to break it. She touched the mug, expecting the crab to respond; nothing stirred. Curious, she tilted the china, and the animal toppled out — a weighing shrug of empty chitin that landed without resistance on the rubber mat. It was the brittle lightness of that husk that redrew the scene; the creature had never been a stowaway, only the seaside’s discarded jacket. She blew gently, and the husk rolled, showing a clean split along the back.

The seafloor ridge swam slowly past the camera, parcelled into neat furrows like the rolling countryside beyond the station, and Yara loosened her grip, joystick resting idle. Depth readouts blinked in orderly columns, their neatness restored after the earlier scuffle. A faint warmth from the monitor glass met her fingertips when they brushed the edge. She nudged the shell to the corner of the console, beside the upside-down mug, and the depth numbers resumed their march. A soft creak from the door drifted through, yet neither colleague moved, the only motion the slow rotation of the cable spool.
