Every evening Padget circled the lamp exactly twenty-seven times, yet tonight his fourth step skidded on a newly damp floor-plate. Instinct straightened his boot before the metal rang, and a quick gesture steadied the ledger balanced on his palm. Above him the great Fresnel lens kept turning, each prism flashing a slice of color across his sleeve, then withdrawing into shadow. Wind pressed the curved glass, the whole room humming like a taut cable; droplets clung to the inner panes where salt crystals had washed back into solution. Padget usually counted the sweeps aloud, but he stayed silent now. He followed the prism’s slow glow while the slip in rhythm ticked against his ribs like an unsettled metronome.
Six hours earlier, pale daylight had poured across the lantern room, revealing layers of tarnish on every brass fitting. Even so, the beam mechanism remained steadfast in its rotation. Padget had lifted the leather-bound ledger from its stained shelf, brushed off salt dust, and penciled the noon flash interval. Seldom had the prisms cast such uneven colors; a faint ochre smear lingered across two rings where gulls had toppled a sachet of lamp oil the previous week. He tested a folded rag across the smeared glass; if the prism were smoother, the cloth would glide. Yet the fabric snagged on a tiny protrusion no wider than a grain of sand. His sleeve damp, Padget noted the blemish, closing the book around a curled corner before the next duty pulled him downstairs.
Now, under night’s colder glare, he returned to that spot, breathing fog against the pane to follow the smear’s outline. What troubled him was the thin fissure running beneath the stain, invisible until the lamp’s heat met the wind-chilled glass. The rag stalled; pressure alone would not erase it. Nowhere along the spiral could he find a passage for the cloth to slip unresisted. A dismayed ripple remained in the damp fabric, its weave distorted by repeated scrubbing. “Steady,” he murmured, the wind swallowing the word. He paused, shoulders squared, then angled the cloth flat, reducing force and letting rotation carry the work. Gradually the residue thinned and the beam sharpened, though the fissure stayed, catching light like a fine silver thread.
Minutes later he reopened the ledger, the page from afternoon still creased, and added a second entry beside the first. What lingered on the paper was not triumph but measurement: the flash now reached full brilliance, yet a note on the fissure sat beneath. A whisper of hope drifted through the lantern room as the mechanism resumed its even tick, more carried in the rhythm than in sound. The stub of his pencil rolled against the brass lip, its wood scraped thin by long vigilance. Outside, the beam swept on, faint prisms skating across the torn cloth abandoned near his boot.
