No scrape of ink stick met the stone yet, and that silence filled the calligraphy studio more densely than sound ever did. Rarely had the room offered such stillness; even the brushes appeared to wait, their tapered tips hovering above the table’s edge like birds on a balustrade. A contented hum rose only from the overhead fan, lifting a single strand of loose paper and setting it down again without fuss. Niall stood beside the inkstone, thumb resting on its cool rim, noticing a faint stain running along the grain of the wide wooden table.
Moments later, another layer joined the still tableau: a tremor in the water basin near the window, hardly wider than a hair yet spreading in concentric rings until it touched porcelain walls. His sleeve rolled higher, Niall tested the brush tip against his thumbnail; in that pause, the fan’s breeze shifted, and the ripple returned, stronger by a fraction he could measure only by sight. What caught his attention was the shallow reverberation that followed—water striking ceramic with a low metallic note, an echo without obvious origin. Over on the other side, Henrik adjusted a stack of drying sheets, but the motion offered no clue.
Third sign: the paper itself wavered, fibres lifting as though some subterranean breath passed below the tabletop. Niall lowered the loaded brush, then halted a finger-width above the sheet; the pause gave his wrist time to recalibrate the angle. Scarcely had the bristles touched when ink spread faster than habit allowed, the line thickening toward a blot. He pulled back, inhaled, and altered pressure, letting the stroke resume with lighter contact. The adjustment steadied the flow, yet the earlier bloom remained, dark as cooled tar, its edge feathered by the paper’s capillaries.
Only when both men stepped away did the source emerge: a loose board under the table leg, flexing whenever weight shifted, transmitting its minute tilt through wood to basin, inkstone, and page alike. Veneration for the craft kept them quiet; instead of speech, Niall knelt and wedged a folded cloth beneath the wobbling foot. The next grind of the ink stick produced a new sound—still soft, but carrying a resonance free of hidden anguish. Water in the basin stood flat now, mirroring brushes that no longer quivered, and the first deliberate scrape spread through the studio like a small, confident bell.
