Oswin stepped over the warped threshold of the kiln shed, the plank flexing once under his heel. A loose swirl in the ash near his boot, as neat as a fingerprint, hinted someone had lingered before dawn. He scanned the shelves and found no sign of the usual copper glaze jars; only unfired cream-colored bowls waited in rows. A dropped rhododendron petal lay beside the nearest bowl, its edge already curling from the dry air. The fire hissed inside the chamber, orange shifting and folding where he glimpsed it through the narrow slit. He slid a narrow board across two bricks to make a ledge, then lifted a tile whose relief showed a fisherman leaning into his net. Beside it he placed three smaller pieces, their surfaces speckled with dark inclusions that, under glaze, would drift like plankton in twilight water. Seldom had the kiln wall radiated such steady heat so early, and a flush crept across his forearms as he worked. With a bakelite-handled rake, he drew embers forward, the hard plastic warming but never scorching his grip. The cone beside the peephole bent a fraction; its tip sagging, he carved out a shallow nest in the ash and reseated it upright. A sudden eddy of hotter air forced him to lean back, and he paused, palms open to the shifting glow.

When the breath of the fire settled, he fetched a shard of polished steel and tilted it to catch the colors inside the chamber. The reflection trembled, and the ash on the floor responded, drawn upward in a slow spiral that copied the first swirl exactly. Only then did he notice the thin gap beneath the brick apron where warm air escaped and spun the grey dust. What he had mistaken for footsteps was a diagram of the kiln’s own breathing. He let out a short chuckle; the sound bounced against the dome before slipping through the flue. "Bright trick," he murmured toward the orange heart, unsure whether the fire truly cared. He stepped back to the threshold; the same plank felt cooler now, and fine ash settled along its grain like sifted flour.
