The Empty Bracket Beneath the Rotating Lens-

English 원문
A low, climbing clatter settled over the lantern room, each iron link rising through the floor grate and sliding into the ceiling drum. Graeme paused beside the brass shelf; that brightening pitch usually preceded a smooth quarter-turn of the vast lens. Today the rotation hesitated, lurched, then staggered onward, breaking its trustworthy rhythm into uneven flashes. Eve wiped each prism in impeccable arcs, and shards of iridescence danced across her sleeve whenever the beam caught up. Outside the glass, a herring gull performed a brief prance along the salt-encrusted railing before the wind lifted it beyond sight. The room narrowed slightly toward the north pane, and the beam's pause left that wedge in momentary darkness.
Behind the central column, a single bolt jutted over an oval patch of clean paint, a silent outline where something once shared the load. The chain drooped toward that gap, its steel curve sagging like a rope too long for the distance it crossed. Graeme touched the vacant space with two knuckles, withdrew, and balanced the ledger on his palm without opening it. When the lens stumbled again, a muted reverberation fluttered through the curved walls and slipped out toward the balcony door. Eve noticed the tremor yet remained wordless, merely sliding the ledger closer across the brass shelf until it touched his elbow.
Graeme cleared his throat and said, "Still within the flash count, but only just." Eve let the cloth rest on the window latch and asked, "Hear it again?" They stood apart, eyes following the beam as it halted, gathered pace, then halted once more like a breath held too long. Graeme's hand lifted toward the winding handle, hovered, fell, and finally tucked itself into a pocket. Around the vacant outline, gears compensated with tiny stutters, and the room’s circular span appeared to lean toward the missing mass. Even the mercury bath under the lens quivered in uneven rings, marking the absence more clearly than a label ever could.
He closed the ledger, laid the pencil beside it, and stepped back until the inner rail intersected the small of his back. Eve lifted neither cloth nor voice; she simply watched the beam sweep through its next quadrant. Glass ribs glided past, throwing ladders of color over the vaulted ceiling and shrinking them again as the turn continued. Wind pressed against the western panes, bending the beam slightly until the mechanism corrected the angle. Beneath the grate, the chain rose another notch and clattered, yet the empty bracket remained undisturbed, a hollow pivot for the room’s motion. Beyond the glass, the beam kept revolving, sending its silent cadence across the dark water.
