The Red Sock and the Silent Dryer Door-

English 원문
No red sock revolved among the pale towels inside dryer twenty-three, and Greer marked the absence as sharply as a skipped drumbeat.
Beside the humming row, Greer tapped a sneaker against the linoleum, matching the drum’s measured sway while water hissed into a washer across the aisle. The drum drank heat, lint, and minutes with unwavering persistence; each tumble buried another pocket of time, yet the glass remained a blur of white fabric. Outside, evening traffic blurred behind vapor that seemed to vanish into thin air the moment it touched the chilly window. Contentment drifted in the sweet, hot-lint scent, thick enough to warm Greer’s cheeks. A paperback rustled as Alaric turned a page and offered, “Nearly done?” Greer opened a palm, then lowered it again without speaking.
The cycles overlapped like slow tides: a washer clunked into spin, coins clinked into a slot, fluorescent tubes flickered once. Greer’s gaze kept returning to that same round door, practicing mindfulness with every revolution, waiting for the bright flash of wool that never surfaced. Twice a hand hovered over the latch, ready to stop the drum; twice the hand withdrew, unsure whether interruption might scorch a sleeve. Warm air pulsed from the dryer vents, pressing hollow cuffs flat, smoothing collars, hiding all clues. At the window, silhouettes thinned; commuters seemed to vanish as the glass clouded deeper, leaving only smeared headlights drifting like fish beneath ice.
A buzzer cracked the rhythm. The drum coasted, slowed, then halted in a single breath. Greer tugged the chrome handle—static snapped—and towels spilled outward in a soft rush. Still no sock. Fingers searched pockets of cloth, sifted folds, patted corners of the metal drum. A hesitation, then a slide of the lint screen revealed a splash of red flattened against the mesh, fibers woven into the mat as though the sock had melted out of its own shape. Greer peeled it free; the fabric uncurled, light yet warm, the lost pattern intact. Alaric closed his book, rose, and quietly began folding a towel while steam traced languid spirals above the machines. Beyond the fogged pane, streetlights kept switching from green to amber and back, a motion so broad it swallowed their small pause without a ripple.
