Stick and Shadow on the Moving Dune-

English 원문
Trent punched the stick into the packed windward face, withdrew it, and punched again, working uphill in quick, rhythmic jabs; each stroke sent a faint spray that drifted, stalled, and then spilled down the slip face out of sight. A lizard track vanished beneath the spray as though erased in mid-movement, and the hiss of the wind cut across the crest like an aerial bow drawn over a sand-bright string.
Below, Kit knelt beside the resting dromedary and tugged at the leather satchel that hung against the animal’s flank. Sand ripples slewed around the satchel’s base, showing where the dune had inched forward. Kit lifted a bead strung on frayed twine; glints of quartz dust clung to its curve, and her fingertips hovered with quiet veneration before she eased it back inside.
Trent reached the summit, but the stick refused to stand; every time he planted it, the crest crumbled, tipping the shaft sideways. He paused, rolled his shoulders, then slid one hand forward in a looping motion his muscles recalled from lashing tent ropes at dawn. Thumb and palm twisted together, wrapping a sling of cord around the shaft’s base and burying the knot under damp subsurface sand. The gesture felt like a silent truce between his impatience and the dune’s slow momentum. When he let go, the stick wobbled once and steadied; its shadow lay thin and definite across the migrating ridge.
Kit’s voice drifted up the slope. “Shadow’s straighter now.” She remained crouched, both palms flat on the ground, watching grains glide past her fingers as though the dune breathed beneath them. Trent lowered himself beside her pack, setting the coil of spare cord on top, and stilled. Wind combed through the dromedary’s short mane; the animal blinked but did not rise. Far above, the planted stick leaned a fraction as another gust arrived, and sand began its slow, unhurried slide down the lee—each tiny grain continuing what the two companions had paused to observe.
