English 원문
Winston’s shoulder brushed an invisible barrier, and a faint squeak of rubber gasket slipped across his sleeve. He tasted the metallic tang the mirror maze always left on the air, as though the silver backing had dissolved into mist. A slim plastic pipette rode in his breast pocket; apple syrup still clung to its tip, sweet and citric on his lower lip when he drew a breath. Rotating spotlights painted blue, then pink, then gold across thirty reflected versions of him, each one pausing before choosing a corridor that promised egress. He halted, weight shifting, as two identical passages balanced in silent equilibrium: both glowed gold, both showed a clear floor, yet only one was glass. His knuckles hovered, unsure which pane would yield.
Three hours earlier, under the striped awning of the fairground kitchen, steam tasted of caramelized sugar. Winston stood over an elaborate copper kettle, ladling syrup into spherical molds that rocked gently on a tray of crushed ice. The molds clicked shut; his wrists repeated a motion learned long ago bottling lemonade—tilt, straighten, wipe the rim—without a thought. A batch cooled near the window, translucent orbs clouding as they tempered. He pinched one between thumb and forefinger, touched it to his tongue, and caught a mellow tartness that promised quick sales once the crowd grew thirsty.
Back inside the maze, a floor button exhaled a muffled clunk beneath his shoe; blue light replaced gold. The syrup bead on his pipette tip glimmered now like a drop of midnight. Without deciding, his fingers performed the same tilt-straighten rhythm from the kitchen, dotting a trace of syrup onto the next panel. The droplet hesitated, then slid; clear glass offered no grip, while mirror refused to swallow color. Winston followed the bead’s lazy path, chuckling when his nearest reflection copied the experiment a heartbeat late. A small child’s laugh bounced from somewhere unseen, and he paused, palm flat against cool surface, letting the syrup choose direction before his feet did.
Steam still clung to the concession window as the kettle’s flame settled to a whisper. On the tray, two dozen candy spheres waited; a thin glaze continued to set, its clarity deepening each minute. Winston had left a single mold unsealed—syrup quivered inside like sunrise caught in amber. Outside, a distant cheer rose from the maze. He watched the liquid steady, unsure whether the cooling sugar would stay transparent or bloom cloudy streaks the moment night air brushed it, and the unanswered taste of that possibility lingered on his tongue.
