English 원문
From the aspen-framed doorway, Ives watched Remy ease a fresh sheet onto the press bed already squared beneath the lamp. The low ceiling trapped heat, its plank span hovering a hand’s breadth above Remy’s cap. Iron columns bracketed the room, narrowing perspective until the far wall appeared closer than memory allowed. Between those columns, drying lines crossed the air in neat grids, each one sagging slightly like shallow arches. A brass stapler weighted down yesterday’s proofs on the composing table, its polished curve reflecting chalky light. Nothing in the arrangement looked different, yet the space felt fractionally compressed, as though every object had edged inward during the night.
Ives stepped inside, boot soles clicking once before the ink-dark floor absorbed further sound. The gap between the type cases and the press handle measured the same three strides, but his shoulder brushed a wooden tray that usually cleared him. Above, the lamp’s cone caught floating moisture; the air carried the thickness of an inland monsoon despite cloudless skies beyond the propped street door. Near the ink slab, a folded rag hung over a hook, its terry loops glistening where linseed sheen had soaked the cotton. He reached for the composing stick, paused, and counted the pica divisions, unsure whether the metal or his reading had shifted. Remy glanced over and murmured, “Go ahead—everything sits level,” yet his voice held a faint lift at the final word.
Ives slid reversed letters into the stick, building a line meant to fit a twelve-centimeter measure. By the fourth word the row overran the gauge, although every piece matched its marked width. He set the line aside, lifted the brass stapler, and ran its flat base along the stick’s interior; the measure still failed. A thought flickered: the floor beneath the press, laid on old silt from the town’s floodplain, might have swollen with the night’s humidity, angling tables imperceptibly. He shifted his weight, noted a gentle roll beneath his heels, and exhaled once. The room, not the type, had altered geometry; each earlier detail now gathered into certainty.
He wedged a slim card under one press leg, nudging the platen back to square, then reset the line and locked the forme. Metal ticked into place; rollers whispered across ink; the platen descended in its measured arc. When the sheet emerged, he hung it beside yesterday’s proofs, letting the stapler rest where it was. Wet ink gleamed, but any skew would only declare itself once the fibres dried and the paper lay perfectly flat. The lamp hummed, and a single drop slid from the rag’s dark edge, hanging undecided in the warm air.
