The Crab That Moved When the Clutter Cleared-

English 원문
“Who anchored you here, little stranger?” Vance hovered over a motionless hermit crab at the tide pool’s center. The basin brimmed with bright shards of shell, bleached driftwood slivers, and ribbons of drying seaweed that overlapped like hurried annotations. He kept adding finds from the rocky ledge—an orange fragment, a spiral chip, a marble of green glass—layer upon layer until the pool resembled a cluttered cabinet. The stillness of the crab punctuated the disorder, as though punctuality possessed its limbs while everything else refused order.
A wrist timer, speckled with salt stains, dangled from Vance’s pocket; its digital numerals read nine minutes thirty, then glitched and stalled, as if the timer froze mid-count. Punctuality mattered because the returning tide swept the shelves clean each afternoon, yet the halted digits offered only intermittent certainty. He shrugged, retrieved another pebble, and let it slip beside the crab, waiting for any intermittent signals—twitch, ripple, bubble—that might reveal the creature remained alive. Nothing arrived except a single ripple rebounding from the far rock; he leaned closer, palm shading his gaze.
Close inspection showed the hermit’s borrowed shell wedged beneath a tangle of seaweed, invisible threads of algae cinching the aperture shut. Vance paused; instead of adding yet another trophy, he lifted one of the earlier shells and used its sharp edge to tease the algae loose. The maneuver slipped, scratched his thumbnail, and left the tangle intact, so he set the tool-shell aside, exhaled, and tried again with slower pressure. Strand after strand surrendered until the final filament parted, and the tiny bubble that followed seemed to proclaim the space now open.
He halted the collecting, pushed every loose fragment to the pool’s rim, and watched clarity return; the water, once clouded by his treasures, settled into translucent stillness. Within that clearing, the hermit crab rotated, extended cautious legs, and stepped free, unhurried yet deliberate, as if the earlier immobility had been nothing more than self-defense. Its path crossed the green glass marble, now gleaming without sediment, and the shell clicked on stone in intermittent rhythm, each tap marking time better than any wrist device. Vance lowered his hand, and the unburdened crab roamed across the sunlit sand.
