Rosa paused in the workshop doorway, the cool air sliding past her collar, while a sandpiper landed on the net stretched between the dock posts. The bird tipped its head, tapped three lead sinkers in quick succession, and skipped sideways with such exuberance that salt crystals glittered where its toes brushed the stone.

She crossed the flags, bone shuttle already between her fingers, certain the measured habits learned from tailoring linens would suit this larger weave. Yet the grey, salt-stiff threads resisted: each time she drew pale twine through a gap, the neighbouring diamonds tightened unevenly, and the familiar rhythm stuttered. From one angle the mesh appeared perfect; a slight step changed the parallax, revealing a skew that her gauge stick could not ignore. Nothing could persuade the new knots to sit flush until she slowed, pressed her fist against the fabric, and felt how the cold in the fibre dulled its give. She did not hasten; instead, she warmed the shuttle against her palm before trying again.

A shutter clicked somewhere behind. A travelling photographer had stopped at the quay, lens glinting, perhaps drawn by the contrast between stone and water. His presence broke Rosa’s concentration, but the returning sandpiper distracted her more: it seized the short trimmings she had dropped and darted beneath a bollard. She straightened, watching the bird thread the loose fibres into a nook in the timber. Earlier pecks for food transformed into quiet construction work, and the sight steered her hands. She clipped the next tail of twine a little longer, laid it beside her boot, and paused, shoulders rolling as if testing the warmth of midday against her chilled back.

Warren’s voice drifted from the shed, "There’s tea cooling." She lifted a hand without turning. The sun had travelled; lead sinkers that dawn left icy now held a mild heat. One of them rocked gently where the wind nudged the hem. Rosa rested a newly warmed sinker atop the mesh beside the waiting sandpiper.

遠處傳來咔嚓聲，一名過客攝影師停在碼頭，鏡頭閃著光，也許是被石頭與水面的反差吸引。但更牽動羅莎注意的是返來的磯鷸：牠叼起她剪落的小線頭，鑽進一旁金屬樁底下。她挺直身子，看見小鳥把鬆散纖維嵌進木頭縫隙。先前她以為鳥在找食物，如今卻見牠默默築巢，這景象改變了她的手勢。她把下一段線尾剪得稍長，放在靴邊，並停下來，聳動肩膀，如同試探正午陽光給冰冷背脊帶來的暖度。
