English 원문
From the fringe of the marked grid, Thea watched a sand-colored lizard halt on a sun-striped slab, its ribbed tail curved like a tiny question. The creature lifted then flattened its body, soaking warmth from the ochre band before hopping to a paler ledge where chalk dust clung to its scales. Its claws scraped a thread of grit that hissed away. That small, deliberate journey drew her eyes across the layered rock more sharply than any lecture. Something in her fingers twitched toward the brush rolled beside her boot. The warmth from the slab reached her knees, even through thick canvas trousers, a reminder of the midday sun pressing downward.
At home she had always cleaned her grandfather’s tarnish-specked tin soldiers with brisk, circular strokes, certain of the motion and the shine that followed. She set the same rhythm loose on the stone, sweeping outward from the spot where the lizard had paused. The bristles snagged on unseen grains and the sound rose in a rough whisper rather than the soft swipe she expected. She slowed, shifted grip, and let each stroke travel the length of her palm instead of her wrist. Dust lifted, drifted, and settled back, refusing easy polish. Grit rasped softly against the brush handle, dimpling her palm where earlier polishing had left smooth calluses.
Oona knelt a square away, tapping for hollows; the bright ping answered dull thunks in irregular counterpoint. Oona glanced up and asked, “See anything?” Thea answered with a small shake of her head and bent lower. The lizard visitor darted again, this time stopping where her brush had exposed a faint arc no wider than a thumbnail. She leaned closer, tilted her head, and traced the curve with the pick’s flat edge. Another arc followed, then a delicate snout; the outline gathered itself, unmistakable—the fossil of a seahorse pressed into sandstone where no sea existed now. Her breath paused; a quiet urge pressed her forward. She decided not to call out but kept brushing, letting the rock unveil a secret at its own pace.
The outline sharpened until ridges along the fossil’s belly echoed the gentle rise of the lizard’s breathing beside it, creature and imprint sharing one sunlit stage. Oona leaned nearer, eyebrows raised, and Thea only nodded, half invitation, half promise of patience. She set the small tin of water just beyond the grid, dampened the brush, and coaxed loose dust away, every stroke measured. Light reflected off tiny mica flecks, turning every breath of dust into brief sparks that blinked out before touching ground. Above them, the afternoon wind fluttered canvas edges and scattered chalky specks while Thea pressed her palm gently beside the newly revealed seahorse spine.
