English 원문
"Who moved this gear?" Dante's voice crossed the workshop, fingers pausing above the crowded watchmaker's desk. The green felt already carried pinions, screws, and a loupe, their silhouettes overlapping like islands on a restless map. Beside them, a pocket watch case once presented to a traveling naturalist waited, its lid mottled with fine verdigris along the engraving. Hattie stood opposite, adjusting the lamp hood until the light swung across the tiny gears with a slow pendulum glide. Yet even that glow struggled to untangle the abundance, and the ticking chorus beyond the door pressed forward like overlapping footsteps. Dante added a fresh brass escape wheel to the pile, certain it belonged, though the desk beneath began to resemble a city at rush hour.
A quiet clink answered when he lowered the wheel against the balance bridge, but the mechanism stalled, delicate balance lost among too many masses. Hattie’s brow lowered; her hand hovered, then drifted sideways to the mainspring barrel without a word. "Let me hold it steady," she offered, thumb and forefinger catching the edge before the coil recoiled. Her grip slowed into a rhythm her muscles learned while shelling peas long ago, the same cadence now calming the tiny spring. The stalled train of wheels began to pulse again, each oscillation subtle yet definite, like a distant drum found in the folds of twilight outside. Dante, halfway to tightening a screw, paused, sensing the new motion, his screwdriver tip suspended above the slot as though time wobbled under it.
A sudden wingbeat flurried at the window grille, the pigeon’s silhouette jerking across the lamplight and startling both pairs of tweezers into stiff stillness. Air shifted, sending a ruby chaton sliding, its tiny circle skipping toward the desk’s edge, pirouetting once. Hattie lunged yet stopped short, calculating the risk of a jolt; Dante’s palm flattened, a barrier rather than a snatch. The gem rolled gently against his flesh and rested, unharmed, while the scattered pieces quivered like surprised insects. In that hush, the crowded components together seemed louder than any shop chime while no clock spoke. Dante lifted the extra escape wheel he had added earlier and placed it on the bare wood beyond the felt. The ticking resumed clearer, as though space itself breathed between the gears once the surplus weight departed.
Later, beneath dimmer lamplight, only the mainspring barrel, the balance bridge, and that first brass gear remained on the felt, spaced like slow planets in wide orbits. Hattie tipped her head, listening as the movement behind the gear spoke in an even pulse, no voices layered across it now. "It holds time again," she said, breath barely stirring the quiet surface, her words riding the regular clicks. Dante exhaled slowly, slid the dust cover closed, and watched the green felt rise a fraction where the removed wheel had once pressed it flat. Outside, twilight deepened; inside, the lone brass gear caught the lamp in a sharper gleam than it managed at dawn.
