English 원문
No ripple disturbed the pale size; the tray’s surface waited, mirror-flat, under the overhead lamps. Halle balanced a cup of green paint at the mixing station, swirling the stick until the liquid loosened. She had stood here many Saturdays, yet the sheen before her always started the same: a mirror of sag stretching from rim to rim, trembling only when breath drifted across it. Today she worked thin to thick, drop by drop, building a miniature landscape of floating circles. Each disc pressed against the next, compressing colour into tight rings that looked promising until the last yellow plop merged two shapes and muddied their edges.
Halle lifted the fine-tooth comb, expecting silky curves; the teeth scratched instead, leaving ragged wakes inside the green bands. “Blue spreading five centimetres,” Cyrus called from the opposite side, notebook balanced on his knee. She nodded, dipped the comb again, and watched more colour dive under the surface, unrecoverable. The pattern sagged where the tool passed, its once gentle spirals slumping into blunt wedges. Her fingers paused midway, grip loosening; something in the resistance felt unfamiliar, heavier than last week, as though the comb itself resisted the pull. She placed the dripping tool on the rack, inked foam clinging to the metal like stubborn residue. A faint whistle from a caged parakeet near the window marked the moment she let go.
Surrendering the tray to stillness, she crossed to the paper preparation shelf and began stacking yesterday’s dry sheets onto the wire grid, the stiff pages cracking softly as they slid. The top sheet felt newer than the rest, its fibres green-damp, still ripening toward the perfect cling; beside it, older stock had mellow edges that curled upward like drying leaves. As her thumb brushed those seasoned corners, a flake detached and drifted onto the comb she had abandoned. It landed against a tooth, catching the afternoon glare. The tooth glimmered dull, half-coated in an uneven crust; the shape of that crust copied the torn wakes on the water. A pinprick of enlightenment rose through her wrist — texture answering texture without words.
She rinsed the comb under the tap, the old paint sliding away in thin ribbons, then laid it flat on the rack and stepped back. The tray waited, its earlier slumps freezing into faint outlines, yet a fresh drop of crimson rippled outward as if greeting the cleaned metal. Halle remained beside the drying papers, fingers idle, watching those rings press gently against the earlier colours. Thin turquoise lenses drifted inward until the tray whispered with slow concentric contractions.
