The Trembling Lid of the Clay Teapot-

English 원문
Every afternoon Cruz warmed the same unglazed teapot, counting breaths while the kettle’s lid tapped a soft metronome; the pattern steadied him. Today the interval slipped. Two taps, a longer pause, then a stuttered third: a syncopation that pulled his brows together. The room otherwise held its calm—rain beating the roof, the wooden scoop balanced across the dish of rolled leaves—but the kettle’s off-beat unsettled the table’s steady cadence. Gwen sat opposite, elbows clear of the wood, watching the lid tremble. She said nothing, only weighed a cup against her wrist. Cruz rotated the burner knob a fraction, listening for a balance that refused to return.
Steam gathered at the spout in undulating ribbons, growing, shrinking, then melting in slow dissipation before reaching the ceiling. Cruz rinsed the clay with a thin swirl of water and poured the first steep. Inside, the leaves broke apart with a muted gyration, fluttering against the pot’s walls like dark moths surprised by light. Gwen leaned closer. “Water’s nearly there,” she murmured, voice soft enough for the small room’s rhythm. A flicker of optimism drifted between first attempt and first taste. Yet when Cruz lifted a cup, the liquor shone too pale, the gold he expected thinned to faint straw.
He brought the rim toward his lips, paused, and set the cup back without sipping. Sight kept lying; colour no longer matched flavour. He shut his eyes, let fingertips read the clay’s warmth, and counted the beat—five slow heart-lengths before new bubbles touched metal. Hearing stepped forward where sight stepped back. Each pop sounded heavier than earlier, as though minerals thickened the water. Cruz reopened his eyes, tipped the kettle sooner than habit allowed, and guided the stream by sound alone, cutting the pour on the downbeat of the lid’s tremor. Leaves answered, unfolding wider; aroma rose sharper, shadows of chestnut and wet grass threading through the steam.
He reached for a cup again; surface glowed deeper amber. A single drop escaped the spout, landed on the edge of a linen coaster, and spread outward in a silent circle. Gwen tasted, nodded once, and set her cup down in the same rhythm the kettle still muttered. Outside, rain slackened, resting between measures. The coaster’s stain cooled from bright copper to dull brown, drying into the cloth grain. Cruz watched the mark expand then settle, neither wiping nor speaking. The kettle lid gave one final tremble, then held still; in the hush after its pulse, the faint circle remained, a cost measured in thread and colour.
