Shell Mosaic After Sunlight-

English 원문
Dorian stepped down from the shingle ridge onto the open mud, his boots sinking just enough to leave clean-edged prints. A wooden marker post leaned beside him, and beyond it the tide had folded away, exposing a mirror of wet sand. He crouched near a recent strandline and began laying scallop shells, cockle halves, and shards of sea glass in a widening spiral. The wet surfaces gleamed, linking into a tapestry of colors that spread outward like threads on a loom. Every piece found its place between finger and thumb, the rhythm steady—lift, tilt, press. A small mussel shell cracked under his knee, and he paused, palm resting on the cool sand.
Carefully, he picked up the broken mussel shell to examine its interior ribs once more. Faint rings stacked within carried layers of meaning about tides he never witnessed, yet he read them through touch rather than thought. Light slid across the shell, releasing a kaleidoscope of emotions in fleeting greens and violets that chased each other across the nacre. The spiral waited, half finished, but a sudden, carrying whistle cut across the wide flat. Alma stood nearer the pools, her hand cupped to amplify the clear salt-tinged call. “There’s something here, Dorian!” she shouted, her voice skipping across the wide water-streaked ground. Without choosing, Dorian rose; damp grit clung to his knees while the cool breeze brushed his sleeves toward the pools.
The nearest pool lay finger-deep and glassy beneath the midday glare, mirroring clouds that drifted slow overhead. Several hermit crabs trudged through the pale sand, their borrowed shells clicking like loose beads. Alma pointed at one that wore a spiral far too large; when it toppled, both children laughed, the sound scattering a silent curlew nearby. She gave Dorian a brief sideways embrace before leaning closer, her braid dipping toward the water. Sun warmed their backs, and the once-cold pool began to mellow out, its surface loosening as trapped air escaped in silver threads. They watched till the crabs settled under kelp tatters and the shine on the water turned hazy. Then Alma’s attention drifted to the distant parent on the ridge, and she waved.
Dorian retraced his broad-toed prints to the spiral, each step collapsing with a soft squelch. While he had been away, wind had sifted a skin of dry sand across the pattern, softening edges and quieting colors. The sun-bleached shells no longer caught rainbow flashes; instead their tones hovered between bone and faint peach, as though the design itself chose to lower its voice. He brushed the new layer aside with the flat of his palm, yet the brightness did not return. For a long moment he knelt utterly motionless, fingertips hovering an inch above the sand. Then he picked a single cockle—earlier placed near the center—and fitted it back into its groove with the same lift, tilt, press he had used before. A thin breath of air crossed the flat, carrying the distant hush of the sea.
