English 원문
The enamel cup sat upside down on the slate windowsill, a single bead of yesterday’s tea trembling inside the rim where Poppy always expected emptiness. Beneath that small wrongness, the chamber kept a steady chorus, gears clicking and chains murmuring against the stone shaft. A pigeon startled near the slit window and darted off as the clock delivered its half-hour clang. Poppy’s wrench lay beside the pendulum glass, ready for the morning check, and she entered the room sure nothing ever changed. A tiny quantity of oil glistened where sunlight settled, and her diligent hands reached for the cloth that would polish the plate.
Dorian entered with an echoing step, his voice gracious yet casual as he remarked, “Looks steady enough.” The phrase bounced off stone, but Poppy’s attention lingered on a faint scrape that rose between ticks, a scrape she never heard before. She leaned toward the escape wheel; light caught a scatter of scratches where the brass met the pallet. The surface, once mirror-bright, now wore lines thin as thread; each mark broke the rhythm meant to compensate tiny shifts in temperature. Her shoulders squared while the cloth remained suspended, motionless in the thin shaft of light. The scrape repeated, quieter this time, as though the tower hid it behind the authoritative clang far above.
She rotated the minute wheel a quarter turn, a test she had performed countless times. The tick answered, but the scrape lingered, riding the sound like a hesitant echo. A weight chain hung lower than her memory allowed; its stone block hovered a finger’s breadth above the floor, an impossible sag for this early in the week. Poppy’s wrench lifted, paused, and lowered; her diligent rhythm cracked open at that lingering pause. She addressed the chain, lifting it just enough to feel its heft, only to watch the slack return as soon as she released it. No single adjustment could compensate for two different failures, and the certainty she carried into the tower thinned beneath the mechanical whisper.
She set the chain down, wiped her palms on her trousers, and let the pendulum’s breath wash through the room. Dorian, noticing the shift in her shoulders, remained silent; only the moderate tick and the distant market bell filled the gap. Poppy crossed back to the window where the enamel cup still stood inverted, its lone bead of tea dried into a crescent stain. She picked up the same soft cloth she had seized earlier, knuckles whitening then; this time her grip loosened halfway. The fabric traced the brass plate in a slower arc, barely grazing the metal. A hush followed each stroke, leaving only the pendulum’s faint vibration against the glass.
