English 원문
On Stella’s calves the windward sand radiated dry heat, while the lee-side breeze behind her moved cool and slate-scented across the back of her neck. She balanced on the slender crest, one boot in brightness, the other brushing darkness, hearing wind hiss on the sunlit face and a separate, lower murmur where loose grains flowed out of sight.
A bevy of tight ripples crowded the slope at her toes; each gust rubbed their edges flatter, then raised fresh ones as if the dune rewrote its skin between heartbeats. Far below, Harris paused on the trail and lifted a hand. “Still watching the ridge?” he called. She nodded, then crouched. Their voices had engaged in dialogue all morning, rising and fading with the gusts, yet the sand remained the louder speaker. Two thin sticks she had planted earlier to settle a dispute about drift already leaned at new angles, their shadows cheating eastward.
Her fingertips traced the upper ripple again. The motion borrowed an old kitchen habit—spreading batter across a griddle—so practiced that her wrist moved before thought. This borrowed sweep fostered understanding in her calluses: coarse windward grit snagged first, then the powder-soft lee dust slipped under her nails. Mid-stroke she froze, sensing an incipient slide under the surface; a faint tremor answered through her knees, and the dune let out its low, humming tone. She pressed the sand flat, but a crescent of grains on the slip face released anyway and sailed downward like a silent curtain.
The hum faded. Light shifted. Her earlier footprints erased themselves, yet the twin sticks still held, recording the crest’s slow migration. She lifted a piece of driftwood, aiming to mark a new reference, then hesitated—what if the very act masked the dune’s own handwriting? Harris’s footsteps softened behind her, waiting without question. Stella steadied the board edge on the ridge, palm flat against the grainy surface; her thumb hovered, poised to push it the final inch.
