Stellan's thumbs settled on the square's corners and pinched inward before his eyes finished registering the color. The motion drew a crisp valley from tip to tip, a sound like distant twigs snapping in frost. A melange of pastel squares lay fanned across the desk, yet his hands reached for the blue without looking. Warm lamplight flowed across grainy oak, catching the shallow dish where water beaded along the rim. He folded along the grain; the fibres yielded smoothly. When he pressed across the grain, the sheet resisted, its surface roughening under his nail, allowing him to discern a slight split no wider than a thread. The paper, like muscle, remembered everything it was taught.
Three hours earlier, Winston paused beside the same desk, sleeves rolled, palms dusted with chalk from the board. He held a loose bundle of practice cranes, each wing uneven, their beaks blunted where haste had slipped into the fold. He set them down gently, then turned one toward the lamp, as if to observe how shadow sharpened the model's angles. “Is the line straight?” he asked, voice low enough that the question blended with the rustle of paper. Stellan compared the bird's seams to his memory of the diagram, looking for the garnish that finishes a form without announcing itself. The answer hid beneath overlapping layers; he merely nodded, and the two men listened to the lamp’s faint hum.
Now, alone, he hovered above the half-made crane and paused. The familiar cedar scent from the drawer rose sharper, almost acidic, mingling with damp fibres and warm metal from the lamp base. The table seemed narrower, the light harsher; details he never questioned lined up for inspection. He slid a fingertip along the central ridge, intending to reverse the fold, then withdrew halfway when the sheet puckered instead of bending. The brief stall broke his rhythm. He rotated the square, set it down, lifted it again, attempting to observe where the new stiffness had gathered. His breath touched the water’s surface; concentric ripples nudged a floating scrap that drifted toward the desk edge and stopped just short.
A memory of Winston’s uneven wings surfaced as the paper resisted, and Stellan altered pressure, coaxing a narrow pleat instead of the expected valley. The adjustment unlocked a hidden pocket, allowing the crane to stand upright, its neck defined by that unforeseen turn. He placed the new figure beside Winston’s earlier bundle; the two shapes shared outline but the fresh creases caught light differently, sharper at every edge. The filament inside the bulb cooled to a faint ember, while the scraps at his elbow slumped, darkened by absorbed water.
