English 원문
A pale ring of oil glimmered on the marble bench—had someone tested a blend and slipped away before wiping the surface?
The wall clock chipped out one beat every second, its brass pendulum catching afternoon light, while a lone pipette still resting in a beaker released a drop every three. Freya bent until her nose hovered above the stain. The scent rode upward in two waves: first a bright ribbon of bergamot, then a quieter breath that reminded her of crushed clover caught between damp thumbs. She pressed a fingertip to the mark; the oil clung, tacky, insisting on its own shape. Behind her, the pendulum kept its strict tempo; the droplet refused to dawdle, landing with a tidy tick that contradicted the clock’s sharper click.
She straightened and reached for the bottle nearest the stain. The cork proved stubborn, squeaking against glass, finally giving with a soft pop that launched an elated puff of citrus into the warm air. A second bottle—older, label faded to a lace of paper fibers—stood beside it. She rocked it once, noting how sediment had collected like rust at the shoulder, then set it down without opening. Pendulum, droplet, cork squeak: three rhythms, none aligned, yet each sketching lines across the moment. Freya slid a clean test strip through the lingering vapour, then paused, strip hovering, unsure whether to lift it to her nose or wait for the scent to settle.
She waited. On the twelfth clash of drop and tick, the pipette’s rhythm faltered; two beads fell in quick succession and, for the first time, the pendulum’s click and the liquid’s tap landed together. The bench tremored—nothing dramatic, just enough to nudge the strip forward so its tip touched the ring. Colour darkened along the paper grain. Freya hesitated, then flipped the strip, revealing that the pale ring was not random; beneath the oil sat a faint etched circle, a guide for centring vials on the marble. The stain had traced it perfectly, turning mishap into marker.
She lowered the test strip beside the circle and stepped back, palms open, allowing the new double-beat to settle without her intervention. Clock and beaker now struck the same pulse, and the merged sound filled the workshop long after her hands fell still.
