English 원문
The diagonal shadow from the roof beam had reached the third row of drying racks—Clara read that sign as wax-cooling time—when a sparrow skittered onto the windowsill and bobbed its head. Diffuse morning glare spilled across the padded tables, turning every brass stamp into a small mirror, yet the bird’s quick outline held sharp against the brightness. Clara rested one palm on the nearest length of cotton; the cloth carried a faint chill even inside the warm, honey-scented room. A single feather escaped the sparrow’s wing, drifted down, and landed near her thumb. It quivered once, then lay still, its barbs glinting like threads already dipped in dye.
She chose a star-shaped stamp, its underside still glossy with cooled wax, and set its edges on the fabric. Press—hold—lift: the familiar thud answered her grip; a spherical bead of wax slipped from one corner and settled like a tiny pearl. Without a quibble, the sparrow hopped closer, pecked at nothing, and left a pair of faint tracks in the new impression. Clara paused, fingers hovering in mid-air, surprised by the uninvited marks yet unwilling to shoo the visitor away. “Still on the sill,” she whispered. “Curious thing,” Hugo replied from the dye trough, his voice carried on the mild cross-breeze that kept the hanging cloths in a slow, kinetic sway.
A few measured minutes later, the stamped panel finally slid into the indigo bath at the room’s centre. The cloth darkened instantly except where wax controlled the colour; the sparrow fluttered back to the window as a plume of blue tint rose and then settled. Clara lifted the dripping length and draped it over the rack; droplets fell in rhythmic taps, each spherical bead breaking into smaller points on the stone. Where the bird’s feet had disturbed the wax, indigo slipped through, creating two rows of silvery ovals, tiny and bright. Together they overlapped like sardine scales along the ragged edge of the star pattern, flashing whenever water rolled away. The unintended seam gave the cloth a sudden, kinetic shimmer, as though the constellation itself rippled.
The light shifted across the floor; the roof-beam shadow now curved past the fourth rack in an oblong strip. Clara returned to the long work table, the feather still resting beside her earlier stamp. She rotated the brass block a quarter turn, noticing how the dulled sheen mirrored the slender ovals on the dyed cloth across the room. Without hurry, she pressed the stamp again—same weight, gentler descent—aligning its edge beside the feather rather than the ruler’s strict marks. The wax spread, caught the angled glare, and held the sheen in a narrow crescent that curved around the empty space. The sparrow observed from its perch; Clara lifted the stamp and set it down, leaving the softened imprint glowing under the diffused light.
