Each loosened loop relieved pressure on the branch, yet every tremor persuaded the bird to dig deeper, exposing pale tissue where the fibrous outer bark had lifted. Protecting the tender surface required stillness, yet freeing the wiry restraint required motion; Heath’s knuckles froze halfway through another twist. He released a shallow breath; copper, bark crumbs, and shadow quivered together on the slats. A pale silken cocoon, previously hidden under a scale of bark, tipped into view, and the wren lunged, beak closing on the husk. Only then did Heath recognise the bird’s true quarry, not the bark itself but the sleeping treat tucked inside. He yielded a narrow opening, lifting his hand away so the hunter could finish, even as another vulnerable bud trembled inches below.

The wren seized the cocoon, beat its wings twice, and vanished over the wall, a stray fleck of bark still clamped in its claws. Quiet settled again, but Heath’s earlier momentum had scattered; he weighed the branch, then clipped the remaining wire instead of unwinding it, trading elegance for speed. The cut ends sprang away harmlessly, landing among the moss where Trent could gather them later. Heath rotated the pot a fraction, sheltering the shaken bud behind a denser fan of needles. He laid the freed coil on the bench as the last slat-shaped shadow slid beyond the tray.
