English 원문
From the open doorway, Daphne watched a dusky sparrow settle on the windowsill inside the tea house; its head flicked left, right, then stilled while the kettle lid performed a tiny lurch with each rising thread of steam. The table below lay set—clay teapot, wooden tray, cups no bigger than walnuts—yet the bird commanded the room, balanced with unstudied grace above the warm haze. Condensation beaded on the pane behind it, rolling downward in uneven distribution, as if the glass mapped every warmer pocket the kettle cast. Daphne remained just outside, cool air on her ankles, and wondered how long the creature would tolerate the slow, aromatic heat drifting across the space.
She stepped in at last; floorboards accepted her weight without protest, though her entrance stirred only a faint rustle from the sparrow. Trent knelt by the low burner, attending to the familiar workflow of tea: scoop leaves, let them fall, rinse the pot, empty quickly, then pour again. He glanced over a shoulder. “The water is almost there,” he said, voice low enough not to rattle the bird. The porous clay, already yielding warmth, darkened a shade where water touched it. Daphne reached for a cup, but the sudden beat of tiny wings stalled her hand midair. The bird hopped nearer the teapot rather than the crumb-free table, tilting its body toward the narrow vent of steam that slipped from the ajar lid. Her fingers paused above the tray, reading heat that brushed the room like a silent invitation.
The kettle was ready for another pour, though bubbles now clung lazily to the bottom instead of rushing upward. Daphne adjusted the angle, letting water slide in a thin arc that cooled a breath sooner than the first steep. She eased the lid back but stopped halfway, leaving a deliberate gap; a soft cloud escaped, threading around the sparrow. The bird lowered its wings, eyes half closed, feathers puffed in what looked like quiet satisfaction. Only then did Daphne notice that crumbs meant nothing; the creature traced the temperature gradient, seeking comfort the same way her palm tested the cup’s rim. A single drip reached the sill, and the sparrow touched it with its beak, an action that redefined the room’s centerpiece without a sound.
Trent poured for both of them and slid one shallow bowl her way. Steam rose, wavered, and thinned; outside, rain cooled the tiles enough that a draft curled through the doorway. The sparrow lifted, circled once, and vanished beyond the lintel, its departure as unhurried as its arrival. Left behind, the pane showed streaks drying in uneven feather shapes. Daphne exhaled, letting the cooled air settle. She took a cautious sip, tasting leaf sweetness now leaning darker. The kettle no longer quivered; its energy had drifted off with the visitor. Daphne lowered the kettle lid onto the now-quiet rim.
