English 원문
No crunch rises under Delia's boots this afternoon; the bank soil yields with a damp sigh instead. The pond she visits every spring holiday lies half-awake, ice retreating from the reeds in an uneven collar of dark water. Candle ice, pitted and granular, patches the centre; each slight crack threads outward, a diagram of loosening bonds. She kneels, tracing yesterday’s boundary, the faint line of frost on granite now several finger-breadths nearer the middle. A birch branch overhead still dips, but today its tip kisses water rather than ice, sending rings that overlap like sketches of vanished hours.
Marco stands a step behind, rolling a small pebble between thumb and palm while studying the scene’s worn edges. “Thin enough to hear the underside,” he says, keeping his voice low so the sound blends with trickling meltwater. Delia answers only by tilting her head; the once-shrill winter silence has lifted, replaced by a pleasant chorus of drips against stone. Moss along the granite shows fresh propagation, bright filaments pushing through the residue left by receding cold. Even the wooden bench, lacquer peeled in scallops, carries a soft green connotation now, as if the tarnish itself were ready to breathe. They remain still, letting the thaw sketch its own narrative arc across the pond. The broad curve from bright white to shifting mirror now travels slowly, deliberately, almost imperceptibly.
Delia lifts a flat, rust-flecked washer from a pocket—winter’s last souvenir—then pauses halfway toward the water. Mud presses a damp print on her jeans, spreading upward in an untidy, branching bloom. She hesitates; the washer may vanish beneath the weakening ice before she can trace its path. That small dilemma stills her wrist, and Marco notices, closing the remaining space between them without comment. He extends the pebble instead, a substitute with less weight and no history, at least today. Delia accepts, adjusts her grip twice, then lets the pebble arc over the open ring, landing with a muted plop near the branch’s tip. Concentric ripples glide outward, intersecting the older rings and breaking them into shards of light. The branch’s ordinary dipping now marks distance, not depth; she watches the ripples reach it, bend, and pass through.
She sets the unused washer on the granite beside her, palm now open and still. Marco lowers himself to the bench; flakes of lacquer lift under his fingertips, drifting away on a light breeze. Neither speaks; above them the birch branch rises, dips, and paints fresh circles over the settling pattern. Behind that slow propagation of rings, the ice continues shrinking, grain by grain, while mud perfumes the air with thawed minerals. Water keeps ticking through the loosened ice, a steady percussion untouched by their pause.
