English 원문
Every Saturday at dusk, Alma lined up the paper cones beside the cotton-candy drum, her routine as familiar as the caramel scent that settled over the lane. The motor’s note usually hovered low and steady; tonight a sharper overtone slipped through, almost a half-step brighter. She tipped her head, listening. Across the gravel, the calliope released a melodious loop, the same tune that circled the fair all season. Two soundstreams—drum whirr and pipe chords—moved past each other without touching. Alma tapped the rim once, a private test of warmth, then scattered a measured scoop of sugar into the center.
Granules liquefied, hissed, and fled outward; gossamer strands formed a pale ring that drifted above the basin. Alma’s wrist turned the cone in slow orbits. The cloud thickened, its edges beginning to undulate when cooler air slid beneath. From the archery stall beyond the popcorn stand came the rhythmic thump of arrows lodging in straw, a counter-pulse that matched neither drum nor organ. Sugar threads clung, released, and gathered again. She counted the laps by sound rather than sight, letting each rotation last the fraction of a breath. Bulbs along the striped awning glowed, their warmth holding off the damp.
Mid-rotation, the calliope’s pitch crept upward, and at that instant the drum’s motor settled into the identical frequency. Long-separate rhythms landed together; the wooden cart trembled; loose filaments quivered like strings inside a sudden symphony. Alma’s fingers paused above the basin. The cloud bulged sideways, strands swelling faster than her motion could follow. She drew the cone back, inhaled, then narrowed her circles and tilted the cone by another fraction. The threads met paper with renewed precision, following the tighter path while still letting each wave ripple along the widening spiral.
The shared beat stayed, a low twin note pulsing through wood, paper, and skin. Miles, waiting with coins ready, offered a quiet “Here.” Alma nodded, completed the final orbit, and pinched the trailing filament free. She lifted the finished cloud the way she always did—wrist loose, elbow close—yet the background now carried a deeper vibration, and the soft candy shimmered beneath the bulbs as though hearing it too. Across the lane an arrow struck, slightly off its usual tempo, then silence settled. Alma laid a fresh cone on the holder, set her wrist for the first turn, and the thickened note shivered through the spun cloud.
