English 원문
Zinnia traced a faint scratch across the half-polished amber block, a silvery filament dull against its cloudy surface. The cooler groove hinted that another pair of hands had paused here and set the piece down while warmth still lived inside. Nearby a square of coarse sandpaper lay curled, brittle at the corners where resin dust had stiffened the fibres. A thin film of condensation laced the bench’s cool edge, marking the boundary where morning chill lingered despite the afternoon lamp. She rolled the amber between her palms, reawakening gentle heat that would rise again once the grit met the surface.
Sam leaned on the bench, adjusting a brass magnifying glass whose rim carried a mellow tarnish, almost green along the shallow grooves. “Look at the color now,” Sam murmured, the radio’s soft hum stealing half the syllables before they reached the window. Zinnia set the coarse sheet aside and chose a finer grade, its smoother surface ready to convey less friction and more clarity. Each circular stroke warmed the block; tiny curls of dust spiralled away, and the scratch blurred into bright amber glow. She paused, thumb resting on the half-cleared path; the line could have vanished or merely hidden beneath glare from the lamp.
Her hand stilled when a cooler draft drifted through the window; the resin lost heat just enough to halt the rhythm. Zinnia lifted a spare lens—an off-cut once shaped for an optician’s display—and aligned it above the amber, funneling light through the widening window. Where she had expected plain transparency, a lattice of veins emerged. They resembled parsley ribs that wither when pressed in a book, yet they gleamed. The scratch now traced the outer edge of a folded wing; damage had never sat on the surface at all. She weighed a micro-decision: leave the piece clouded or trust her touch for two final passes.
Two near-weightless passes let hidden light pour outward until the insect froze clear, one leg raised as if testing ancient air. Heat spread along her fingertips, then slipped away when the cloth rested beside the tray. Zinnia exhaled, lifted the amber toward the window, and tilted it so Sam could watch the creature catch late sun. Outside, the bicycle bell chimed farther down the lane while the radio stuttered through a new chorus. She settled the glowing stone on waxed linen and draped a square of gauze across it, the cooling surface still shifting under the thin weave.
