When Yves stepped back and murmured, “There’s room beside the tray,” Roslyn crossed the wooden floor. She laid a dried delphinium floret near the feather, its once-blue petals now brittle and silvering at the edges. Beside it she set a round pebble still streaked with salt from the esplanade; the grainy crust rasped against the paper lining. Each object greeted her fingertips differently: the petal crumbled almost soundlessly, the pebble resisted with cool weight, the feather slid away on a breath of air she barely noticed releasing. Details accumulated: a faint fissure cutting through the pebble’s quartz, pale dust tucked among the feather’s barbs, the weave of the white lining itself. A breeze slipped through the open window, cooled the skin along her forearm, and tilted the paper just enough to skew her line. Roslyn halted, lifted the lens slightly, then sank it again, adjusting her own breath so the floating circle would still.

A cloud drifted over the sun without warning; light thinned, shadows slid, and the magnified world dulled as if someone had turned down a lamp. The sudden dimness folded every fine edge into softness, undoing minutes of careful alignment. Roslyn straightened, squared her shoulders, and shifted the tray so a brighter slice of window light could climb back across the paper. The circle sharpened once more, yet a smudge—her own fingerprint—now stretched across the glass, scattering tiny spectra into the view.
