English 원문
Warm afternoon air pressed heavily against Glen's shoulders by the open hatchway above the stairs. Below, the cellar’s cool breath rose when a chain-hung weight nudged a wooden switch, and the overhead bulb blinked awake. Glen leaned forward, weight shifting to the balls of his feet, feeling the narrow stair tremble under the sudden imbalance. Dust motes, startled by the light, began to swirl around the bulb like tiny dancers startled from sleep. Somewhere deeper, a muted drip landed on stone, then another, marking time more slowly than the clock upstairs. Cedric's voice drifted up, soft and even, carrying no echo in the absorbent stone vault.
Glen descended, each step measured; his knees bent slightly to keep balance as the packed earth floor met his soles with cooled firmness. Cedric stood beside a row of oak barrels, palm flat against one, listening for a quiet glug that signaled trapped gas. "Still breathing," he murmured, and turned the slender pipette between thumb and finger, admiring the old craftsmanship carved into its handle. Glen braced a shoulder against a barrel of pear juice, then tilted it a fraction; he watched fine sediment skitter across the curved interior before it drifted back. A faint sweetness rose, met by the cooler air, and the two layers mingled until neither fully claimed the space. Between the alcoves, the gloom pooled, hinting at a mystical realm that imagination could wander though feet could not. Glen caught himself bending closer, steadied his hips, and let the barrel roll back onto its cradle.
Deeper in, Glen marked a quiet stack of signals gathering under the vaulted roof. Wax bungs showed slight puckers, condensation traced unfamiliar paths, and somewhere a second hidden chain gave a subdued tic. Each note landed lightly, yet together they pressed upon his balance, drawing his center forward by imperceptible degrees. He paused, toes gripping inside his shoes, because the first chain near the stair clicked again without a touch from either of them. Glen lifted the weight gently; instead of dimming the light, the motion slid a narrow vent stone aside, letting a sharper breath escape. Cedric straightened, eyebrows rising, though no words followed the brief exchange of stone and air.
Glen’s shoulders lowered, and his stance widened a little, as the paired chains revealed their double task: light above, breathing stone below. He traced the mechanism once more, fingers brushing metal links, then let the vent close so the quiet returned to its measured pace. After a moment, he walked back to the pear barrel he had tilted earlier. This time, his knees bent deeper and his palms spread wider, and the barrel’s curved body eased only a whisper before resting again. He lifted his hands away from the staves more slowly than before, feeling their slight warmth linger against his palms.
