English 원문
The rubber brayer stood on its handle, balanced like a toy tower instead of resting flat against the glass slab. Beneath it, a wavy ribbon of mist marked the cold surface, the sole trace remaining after Janet lifted the window demister. Outside, a breeze rattled the bamboo chime, while inside the fluorescent tube set above the bench hummed a soft, steady grievance. That hum settled into its own tempo, neither quick nor slow, a plateau of sound spreading over wood, paper, and tools. Janet pinched a corner of damp rice paper but stayed still, noting how the droplet gait on the slab echoed the lamp’s vibration.
Opposite the brayer, Warren rolled fresh indigo across the carved cherry block, each pass producing a tacky cling and a short release. Ink gathered only on the ridges, and the valleys stayed pale; the roller’s cadence answered the lamp’s hum without matching it. When the third layer looked even, he tipped the block toward the window so Janet could designate the registration corners with a graphite point. She brushed the faint angles twice, then paused, because the misty ribbon on the slab had darkened as though pulled by the indigo. Beside her elbow lay the baren, still warm from the morning run, its ridged face catching flecks of indigo.
Warren murmured, the brayer held aloft, “Ready when you are, Janet; the ink listens as well.” Janet nodded, fingertip still above the paper, and answered, “One small breath more before we meet the block.” Janet let the paper hover above the inked block, and in that suspended breath the lamp fell silent for half a second. Silence met the roller’s next pass, the tempos colliding, and her fingers answered by settling the sheet exactly where the graphite marks waited. No plan chose that instant; her wrist simply followed the brief union of hush and cling. Paper touched ink, and darker threads seeped through the fibres, revealing the ribbon on the slab not as moisture but as clear varnish Warren had tested earlier. What looked accidental now read as an underlayer intended to soften the first colour, a hidden demister for grain that often clouded the image.
The fluorescent tube resumed its hum, though fainter, as if the varnish under the paper had siphoned a little energy from the air. Outside, the chime stayed still, and the room’s rhythm settled into the quiet scrape of fibre against wood. Janet circled the baren once, expecting drag, yet the sheet glided on that unseen layer. She halted, palm hovering, and exchanged a glance with Warren, whose eyebrow lifted but whose hands kept the roller turning slowly on the slab. Noise, glide, and hush now ran the same circuit, and her second circle over the paper felt inevitable. Janet pressed the baren across the centre of the damp sheet, locking the new rhythm into the fibres.
