English 원문
Lily closed fingers around the gate’s top rail, expecting dry splintered wood; instead, her palm skidded along a glassy skin of cold dew, and her balance shifted before thought caught up. Light seeped sideways through the fog, turning every droplet on the vernal grass into a faint lamp, while Padget’s boots pressed dark ovals behind him. A lark burst upward, its wings beating with sheer exuberance that scattered beads from the wire above, yet the bird dissolved into whiteness after only three spirals. The meadow, once a plain sheet of colour, rearranged itself into floating rooms whose walls drifted away each time she blinked.
With each slow step the world offered a new discrepancy. Clumps of clover bowed lower than usual, heavy with water; a patch of daisies that normally flared near the fence showed only leaves; even the distant farm bell, regular as breathing, withheld its metallic pulse. Padget’s soft whistle—thin, wandering, almost merriment made audible—traced the silence and settled into it. Ahead, the boundary stone that had always stood hip-high between two posts looked diminished, its top now barely grazing Lily’s knee. She paused, one boot half-raised, the fog bright enough to cast her own silhouette onto the grass yet too dense to reveal the marker’s detail.
“Stone’s shrinking,” Padget spoke without turning. Lily crouched, fingers combing through wet stems until granite met skin. The upper edge felt familiar, the lower edge did not; earth had swallowed a full handspan of rock since yesterday’s walk. She pressed both palms against the surface and rocked it gently—soil glugged around the base, releasing a scent of turned turf and something older. Light slanted through a brief rent in the fog, showing vertical scratches that had once been horizontal; the whole slab had tilted, not shrunk. For a moment the sight seemed to transcend simple movement, as if the meadow itself were reminding them that stillness is seldom true. Lily straightened slowly, water running from her cuffs, while the fog stitched itself closed again and the stone disappeared below its own shadow.
No repair felt necessary; the marker simply occupied a new depth, and the path across the field redrew itself around that quiet fact. Lily and Padget walked on, their steps adjusting to fresh contours the sinking stone had foretold. Behind them, moisture kept sliding from blade to blade, gathering at roots, and the gradual weight of that unseen flow went on shaping the meadow long after their outlines drifted into the luminous haze.
