English 원문
A slick thread of moisture climbed the inside of the windscreen, bending whenever the road tipped over a root-ridge and returning to its slow ascent once the tyres settled again. Cedric’s hands rode the vibration through a wheel wrapped in cracked leather, the blue-and-white rings of his nautical jumper shifting centimetres with each correction. Beside him, Winona leaned closer to the glass; the lower edge already dulled everything beyond to green blur, though a dilapidated timber shelter flashed past in a single clear stripe before fog reclaimed the pane. She tugged a cloth from the dashboard pocket, brushing a small balloon that had rolled there—faded yellow, a smile and two amazed circles for eyes drawn in marker long ago.
Winona pressed the cloth to the glass. It drank the damp without changing colour, so she folded it and pressed again. Drop after drop vanished, absorbed into fibres that showed nothing beyond a deepening weight in her fingers. Between wipes she lifted a bottle, poured a trickle of water through its neck, and swirled to dilute the last of yesterday’s juice; the sweetened swirl slipped down her throat, cold against the humidity, then her hand returned to the rhythm—cloth, glass, pause—while the forest threw alternating shutters of shadow and brightness across her knees.
Cloth, glass, pause—until the next bend ended the pattern. A shaft of hard sunlight struck the dashboard; condensation bloomed everywhere at once, a silvery skin racing faster than her hand could move. She hesitated, palm hovering, then angled her body, cracked the window two finger-breadths, and let the outside rush in. Cool, wet air rolled over her arm, beading instantly on the already soaked cloth. The cloth sagged, water running along its edge, and the little balloon slid forward, nudged by the breeze, bumping her ankle with a soft tap before lodging against the seat rail where it quivered like a captive insect.
Cedric eased into a lay-by, tyres hissing on the perpetually damp shoulder. When the engine stilled, forest sound poured through the half-open door: drip after drip meeting leaf, then a bird’s clear note cutting the hush. Winona set the cloth on the bonnet; water spilled from it in a narrow rope, flashing once in the sun before spattering the tarmac. On the windscreen, the earlier fog had broken into perfect beads that caught the light like scattered seed-pearls, each one reflecting a slice of fern-filtered sky.
