English 원문
Every afternoon, Theo balanced the bamboo rods in the same order on the narrow rack, yet the first rod dragged more firmly against his palm today. He shifted his grip, surprised that such a light stick could bear an almost leaden pull toward the floor. Behind the taut screen the electric lamp already glowed, turning the empty cotton into a silent rectangle of stage-ready dusk. Theo threaded the horse puppet close to the fabric, checking how its shadow settled, crisp and life-sized, exactly as yesterday. He paused, noticing that slight difference but unable to name it, then lifted the next figure to continue the sequence.
A sudden metallic splash rang outside, a clang that precipitated Theo’s sprint to the backstage door. “Gutter’s spilling again!” Harriet called, her voice thin against the rinse of rain beyond the walls. Theo set the puppet down, leather limbs tapping the rack, and slipped into the alley where the theatre kept a barrel for rainwater harvesting. Cold drops gathered on his sleeves while he dragged the blue drum beneath the misaligned pipe; each litre landed with a thump that vibrated through the plastic. He waited until the stream struck the drum’s centre, then stepped back; rainwater gathered fast, pulled downward by its own heft, no longer splashing the brickwork. When the overflow eased, he wiped his hands on his trousers and hurried back inside, drops rolling from his hair.
Inside, cooler air slid across his cheeks; the open door had let a draught coil round the lamp and cause a subtle diminution of the beam’s strength. Theo reached for the horse again, yet the rod listed left, rainwater having travelled along the bamboo and gathered at the leather joint. He slid his fingers outward until the new centre of mass steadied, then pressed the figure close to the cloth. A monstrous, soft-edged stallion ballooned across the screen, swallowing the painted peaks behind it. Startled, he let the puppet drift backward, exploring how distance could express grandeur rather than speed. Above the lamp, a frayed ribbon from an old commemoration trembled, its movement matching the slight quiver in his wrist. He withdrew his hand, and the unintended giant shrank, leaving only the intended, life-sized horse cantering over diminishing hills.
He reset the distance, mindful of the new heft the raindrop had gifted the joint, and the horse now galloped across the cotton at a majestic, measured stride. Harriet, crouched by the prop table, raised an eyebrow without speaking; her own hands described a circle in the air, agreement mutely expressed through motion. Theo lifted another puppet, testing its balance, before the stage manager’s knock warned that the audience waited, unseen but keen beyond the glowing fabric. He exhaled, rolled his shoulders, and let the bamboo rods settle into position; leather, wood, and shadow readied themselves under the steady pull of gravity. Lamp heat lingered against his knuckles, a gentle weight that stayed even after his fingers relaxed.
