English 원문
A buttery scent from yesterday’s quiche still floated above the observation table. Helena set her notebook aside and began her usual morning check of the seed trays. Each clear lid rested on a thin plastic film held down by tight rubber bands. Those bands had been flexed and released many times. An old recipe book lifted the back edge of the main tray. The seedlings leaned toward the window light. Close by, a glass jar showed a faint crust of salt. Ocean water had evaporated there during a past experiment. A narrow bar of sunlight lay across the wooden stool, picking out shallow grooves along its seat. Everything looked familiar, so her hands moved with steady rhythm.
Heat from the rising sun warmed the rubber, and one band began to sag. Helena pinched the loose loop and tried to stretch it back into place. The material felt sticky, not taut, and a soft creak hinted at strain. She swapped it for a fresh band, hooked one end, then pulled the other side across the dish. The new band stretched wide, slipped, and snapped against the metal scoop that lay beside the soil cup. The scoop sprang off the table and scattered potting mix across the tray. It thudded against Nadia’s shoe as she stepped in. “Careful!” Nadia said, jumping back. Soil specks dotted Helena’s sleeve, and the tray now carried uneven weight.
She brushed the soil with a small paintbrush. Some grains stayed wedged where the rubber edges pressed the film. The routine called for speed, yet the spill forced a slower grip and lighter pressure. Helena left the scoop on the bench and pressed the new band again. It held, though the film showed a shallow ripple from the earlier impact. A dark smudge also stained the cover of the recipe book, proof of the sudden rebound. She slid the seed tray aside, letting today’s check rest unfinished. Her fingers reached toward a jar of dried yarrow on the side shelf. She lifted one pale stem toward the window light.
