English 원문
'What keeps whirling under the benches?' a girl near the orange stall shouted.
A tin cup lid spun in tight circles between chair legs, its edge silver and bright. Above the lane, a low branch of a plum tree stretched over the awnings. Soft plum tree blossoms slipped from it like slow snow. A gray squirrel crouched on that branch, nose twitching at the faint scent of roasted nuts below. The morning market breathed noise and color. Woven baskets turned slowly on display hooks, pushed by small passing hands. At one end, a potter repeated an old tradition. He turned a narrow wheel that shaped wet clay into bowls.
The spinning lid caught the squirrel’s eye. It leapt to the stall roof and dropped beside the lid, paws splayed on the cool tin. One quick push sent the circle twirling again. Metal scraped against stone, leaving a thin ringing note. The lid slowed near a basket of dried figs, so the squirrel nudged it from the opposite side. This time the rim rolled over a slick patch of crushed grape skins. It curved toward a brass pan, the motion sharpening as though the lid tried to reel away. A final flick angled the circle onto a woven mat where its edge met thicker friction and stalled. Then it wobbled upright before falling flat.
The flat lid, still, now touched a heap of beans beside the brass pan. One slight tremor sent three beans rolling off the heap. They bounced against a wooden spoon and clicked into a shallow bowl. A vendor laughed, 'The market toys itself today!' Shoppers paused and watched the tiny commotion, yet no one moved the squirrel away. Around them, helpers started to clear up the stalls while awnings flapped in a softer breeze. The squirrel left the quiet lid and turned toward a leafy stack of coriander stems dangling from another counter. It gripped one stem, sprang onto the branch above, and let the green threads swing behind its tail.
