Two narrow aisles ran between ceiling-high shelves, each only a shoulder’s width apart. A ladder stool waited at one end, and a wire cart with folded cloths blocked the other. It was Wednesday, so Chef Bram and his apprentice Ivy counted trays, jars, and bins, checking weight and date but not hurrying. Warm air from the kitchen drifted through the half-open door; it carried a faint smell of nutmeg that mixed with the colder dust closer to the floor. A ginger cat watched from a low box, tail flicking whenever a spoon chimed against metal.

Ivy balanced a stack of flat tins on her left palm. The tins pressed together, yet the top one still spun a little, its rim scraping. Above her, a forgotten balloon had lost gas since last weekend; it drifted downward, moving barely faster than a falling leaf. Its string brushed a row of ceramic bowls. The first bowl slid, momentum nudging the next, and a soft chain of motion began. Ivy shifted one foot, angled her elbow, and let the tins lean against her hip. That small change freed her right hand long enough to nudge the sliding bowl back. The collision stopped; only a dull wobble remained. Startled by the brief rattle, the cat sprang across the floor, paws thudding before it squeezed behind a broom and dustpan. Bram laughed once, not as an order, only a sound of surprise. Ivy answered with a grin and returned to checking the quality stamps on each tin while the balloon kept sinking in slow, aimless spirals.

The tins stayed where she left them, and the cat’s tail slowly uncurled. A hush rolled along the shelves as the balloon’s drift eased; its ribbon barely moved in the still air.

艾薇用左掌托著一疊扁平金屬盤。盤子之間緊壓，但最上層仍微微旋轉，邊緣摩擦出細細的聲響。頭頂有顆上週剩下的氣球因為洩氣緩緩下降，速度比落葉快不了多少。細繩擦過一排陶碗，第一只碗開始滑動，動量推著下一只，產生輕微的連鎖移動。艾薇向前挪一步，將手肘微微內收，讓托盤斜靠在髖部。這小小的動作空出右手，足以把滑動的碗推回。碰撞止住，只剩沉悶的晃動聲。被短暫的撞擊嚇到，貓跳過地面，爪子啪嗒響，然後鑽到掃帚與畚箕後面。布萊姆笑了一聲，只是驚訝的反應。艾薇回以一抹笑，又繼續檢查每個盤子的品質印章，而氣球仍以漫無目的的螺旋慢慢下沉。
