English 원문
"The shuttle rests near your foot."
Ned crouched, picked it up, and placed it on Nolan's palm. The familiar hum of the loom spread through Nolan’s arms as he slid the wooden piece between the tight warp. Every return stroke kept the bright threads in clear order, like soldiers lining a road. A strip of midnight blue yarn slipped into place, its cool sheen crossing a warmer gold line that looked almost exotic against the pale linen. Above the steady clack, a pedal creaked each time Nolan pressed it, while a faint rattle from the spinning wheel answered in the corner. Warm light fell through the high window and struck the cloth; the beam also touched dust motes that drifted with no purpose of their own, carrying the dry smell of fiber toward both men.
Halfway through the next pass, a deeper vibration rolled across the floorboards, stretching the loom’s natural hum into a strange echo. Ned’s eyebrows lifted, but his hands stayed on the warp, testing its tension. Nolan paused and listened; the new note came again, lower, as if some hidden drum lay under the room. The sound rose from the alley, not from their tools. Nolan, who had once worked as a barista and still judged rhythm by ear, caught the odd pitch shift first. He eased one treadle sideways, and the vibration mellowed, yet a loosened warp thread still buzzed like an uninvited guest at a banquet. Nolan pinched that thread, twisted it tighter, and the buzz fell quiet.
The shuttle finished its path without snagging. Nolan lifted the fresh panel from the loom and folded the fabric along the bench edge, a tiny curl of blue and gold showing where the strange echo had passed.
