English 원문
"The wheel stuck again."
Roslyn pressed her palm against the iron rim. The gear underneath clicked once, then refused another turn, so she leaned harder and felt the rough handle heat against her skin. A bitter smell of hot metal mixed with the cool drag of damp paper, lingering around the press like invisible dust. She lifted the frame of reversed letters; from the front the shapes failed to make sense, yet the pattern pleased her eyes. Ink rested on the roller, waiting for a smooth pass across the type.
Overhead, a loose slate let outdoor rain slide inside. Moisture gathered on a ceiling beam, formed a clear bead, and started its own slow adventure toward the floor. Below the drip, a thin wooden dowel held a drying sheet; the sheet fluttered whenever the bead quivered. Beside it, a smaller cog still twirled freely, left over from the last pull of the lever. Both motions—Roslyn’s steady winding and the ceiling’s silent drip—worked apart, each marking time in its own rhythm.
The next bead fell faster, struck the spinning cog, and splashed into its teeth. Water spread along the metal, lowered friction, and the cog jerked forward without justification from any hand. The sudden slip tugged the connected shaft; the waiting roller lurched, skating a stripe of glossy ink across Roslyn’s thumb before sliding over the type. Letters shifted; their right edge lost clean justification, crowding unevenly while the press still chased its orbit. Roslyn stepped back, wiping ink on her apron as the big wheel eased into another slow pivot.
Outside, rain thickened and hammered the shop’s doorway. Water pooled across the threshold, crawled past the mat, and soaked the fallen sheets until the ink bled outward in widening blue circles.
