Pierce pressed his palm onto the cold metal bed. The press lever hummed at a low pitch, and the tray of metal letters trembled in answer. A faint creak joined the hum when he locked the chase, yet the sound settled once the frame tightened.

Warm air drifted from the drying rack, carrying a sweet ink smell that mixed with the sharper scent of oiled steel; light from a high window flickered across moving dust.

Pierce tore a lump of sticky ink from its waxed wrapper and began to knead it between his fingers. The thick paste squished, and each squeeze released a soft pop. He rolled the blob onto the inking plate, then dragged the roller across it; the pitch shifted higher as the rubber gained an even coat. A brief hesitation stopped his arm when the lever produced an unexpected metallic ring, but the bench stayed steady, so he slid a fresh sheet against the guides and pulled. The press thudded. An echo bounced off the tin ceiling, followed by a sharper rattle from the type rack behind him.

The sheet emerged with the meadow image clear, yet a ring of extra ink darkened its corner, round as a doughnut. A single O block lay crushed in the ink pool; vibration had shaken it free at the last second. Another rattle rose from the rack. Loose consonants rolled toward the edge, their tiny shoulders knocking together. Tin drawers quivered, and one more block tipped over the lip, striking the floor with a bright ping. The vibration climbs through the trays, and fresh letters keep skittering downward.
