Heat from the nearby door excited the sugar glaze resting in a tin cup, so a skin formed and lifted at the edge. Helena lifted the cup and poured a slow ribbon over Pascal’s spiral; the ribbon slid forward, thick as lava, and pooled in the center before spreading outward. The fresh glaze bounced lightly when Pascal nudged the board, then settled. Flour dust drifted, caught the light, and landed across both their aprons. “Looks round enough,” Helena said while sliding a metal peel under the coil. Pascal guided the peel toward the oven mouth, the edge scraping along stone. The loaf entered the red chamber, and the surface lifted once more before stillness returned.

Pascal eased the peel out, closed the heavy door, and set the tool upright beside the bricks.
