Sam reached for another egg. At that moment a hen landed hard on the perch. The beam shook, the measuring tool swung forward, and its blunt end bumped the basket’s rim. The jolt tipped the top egg, and Sam’s knees slid on the loose straw as he lunged to steady it. The basket rocked once more, then settled without a crack. Beside him, Tara knelt and said, “Nice save,” while she brushed pellets into a wooden trough. Grain rolled away from her scoop, drawing the nearest hen closer until its beak tapped Sam’s boot. He shifted back, held the basket higher, and resumed tapping each shell, restarting his silent tally from one.

Above their heads the ruler still swayed, though the arc had shrunk. Below, Sam’s fingers kept moving egg to basket, and the hens continued their slow rotation along the perch. Tara laid the empty scoop on a hook, wiped her hands on her jeans, and lifted the full basket onto the shelf.
