English 원문
Briny tar mixed with the faint smell of dried kelp above the quiet dock.
Xenia rested her palm on an old railing. A row of glass jars, once used for paint, dangled from twine along the beam. When her elbow brushed the first jar, it tapped the wood and gave a clear ring that echoed under the planks. A second jar still held a finger-deep pool of rainwater; its slower vibration produced a lower hum. The difference caught her ear, so she lifted a short wooden dowel that a passing handyman had forgotten beside his dented mallet.
She tapped three jars in gentle order. The first answered with a bright ping, the second with a muffled thud, and the third, half hidden behind a wilt of seaweed, gave almost no sound at all. She slid the seaweed away and noticed a small bundle of canvas pressed against the glass. Once the cloth slipped free, a noble tone rose, deeper than the others, and traveled along the boards until it met the stone shore and bounced back as a soft echo. Tobias strolled past with coiled rope over his shoulder and laughed, "That corner of the pier just woke up." His sandal nudged a rusted tin funnel lying upside down. The metal began to rattle in sympathy with the jars, an unexpected chorus that set tiny ripples racing across the harbor surface.
Xenia added one more tap, then laid the dowel next to the mallet. The jars swayed in uneven rhythm, each note sliding into the next while sunlight glanced off their chipped mouths. A sudden thought drifted away as the sounds settled, leaving only the gentle creak of rope above the waterline. A gray-and-white gull dropped onto the rail, pecked once at the vibrating funnel, and lifted toward the open sky.
