English 원문
The storeroom smelled of lemon polish mixed with damp cardboard boxes.
Dorian the librarian pushed the narrow door wider and slipped between stacked shelves of supplies. A school excursion waited outside; he needed plates and a bright cloth for an afternoon picnic. Light from a single bulb fell across wooden crates and a dusty jar of violet ink. A glass thermometer lay beside the jar, once used to test room temperature for fragile books.
He lifted a wicker basket, and its corner nudged the ink jar. The jar tipped, slow as syrup, and thick violet liquid began to pour across the metal shelf. Ink met the thermometer first, then seeped around its glass body, rising with gentle pressure. Tiny bubbles wiggled up through the shiny surface, popped, and released a faint smell of dried berries. Dorian set the basket down and whispered, "Easy now," while his fingers searched for a cloth. He found an old cotton towel, pressed it against the flow, and felt the viscous ink resist. The towel darkened, yet overflow continued, sliding in a slow current toward a rubber toy octopus. Its soft tentacles curled as the dye touched them, turning their pale color into deep midnight purple.
Dorian folded the towel again, squeezed, and watched ink swirl outward like tiny storms before settling. Pressure inside the jar dropped; the remaining liquid stopped at the rim, leaving a glossy pool contained. He wiped the thermometer clean, checked its numbers, and placed it higher on a ledge. The cloth and octopus rested together inside an empty tin, away from the slow-moving stain. Dust drifted through a beam of light, turning in the warm draft from the corridor. A spotted beetle crawled under the door frame and paused beside the violet edge. It tapped the metal twice, then continued across the shelf, leaving twin dots inside the shining ink.
