English 원문
"Slide the tray closer."
Merritt nudged the wooden tray over the waxed bench; its feet scraped on the grain. Glen leaned against the iron press, set fresh type, and pulled the long lever down. Metal jaws pressed paper and ink together, then lifted with a yank that left glossy letters shining. Near the window, printed sheets already hung from a twine loop, each corner clipped with small wooden pegs.
Bright light spilled through dusty glass and caught tiny ink mist dancing above the press. The drying rack rocked whenever a cool afternoon breeze edged in from the yard. Pages brushed and whispered like distant gossip of leaves against each other. At the same time, Merritt stacked clean cotton paper into a neat pile. Smooth sheets slid, stopped, and slid again as their fibrous edges gripped each other. One page snagged on a rough splinter and bent sharply along one corner. He forged a straighter edge by rubbing it firm against the polished marble inking slab. While he worked, Glen pressed another run, rhythm steady, rollers squeaking where oil had worn thin. "Blue pigment dries slower than the red today," Glen observed while the roller settled back.
A gust stronger than the earlier breeze pushed through the open door. The rack swung wider, and one damp sheet slipped from its peg. It skidded across the smooth floor and landed face-down on Merritt’s stack. Wet ink smeared across several clean pages, dark stripes looping over margins and blotting spaces where letters belonged. Merritt froze, his hands hovering above the stack without touching the wet ink. Glen’s next form caught the smeared roller and left a blurred impression before he noticed. Glen lifted the roller, shook his head, and began wiping the type clean with a rag. Merritt peeled the spoiled pages apart; edges stuck, then released with tiny pops as the inked surfaces separated. He laid the ruined sheets aside and reached for fresh paper near the bottom of the stack. The press cycle started again, though its rhythm now carried a slower drag. He set the paper down and crouched beside the bench to find the source. A loose type block had slid free and now rested against his shoe. He picked up the little partner of the larger letters from the dust. He turned it in his fingers and looked toward the storage drawer.
