Quinn nudged the low wooden stool across the storeroom floor. Dust drifted through a beam from the single bulb and settled on stacked tins. At the same time wax gathered along one rim of the tray, then slid down in slow drops. Each drop struck the floor with a soft click and began to solidify into irregular buttons. The growing line of buttons crept toward the stool like small pioneer stepping stones.

Quinn shifted his foot, seeking better balance, yet the heel pressed onto one fresh wax button. The crushed button skidded aside, and the stool tilted a finger’s width toward the metal tray. That tiny lean nudged the tray’s wooden support, throwing its load of wax into sudden conflict with gravity. Wax rushed to the lower edge, the tray pivoted, and half-cooled sheets folded over themselves. Beside the tray the cups rattled; Quinn, an apprentice engineer, gripped the shelf and steadied them. The tray, now off-center, continued to seesaw, and the stool under Quinn kept a slow wobble. Liquid wax now streams along the dipping rim, leaving a thin, glossy trail on the metal. The shiny trail thickens by the second, and the tray teeters forward once more.
