While heat gathered on its surface, he passed time by tapping a glass jar. Moist beads formed on that jar’s chilly side, and dried paint flakes on a nearby toy boat showed old creativity frozen in color.

A soft click rose from the warming tin, so Axel returned. He lifted the lid gently. Inside lay a pressed flower, brittle and golden. Warm air met the petals, and a faint cloud of pollen drifted upward, dancing in the light like fine sand. The cat sneezed once and backed away. "That was a surprise," Ulla said, her voice low to avoid stirring the dust. Axel watched the cloud settle over his shoes, leaving tiny yellow grains on the leather.

He placed the flower back inside, eased the lid down, and slid the tin under a folded quilt. Then he wiped the pollen from his shoes with a slow brush of his sleeve.
