English 원문

Every morning Delia settled on the low stool before the wide table. Today, however, the fleece blanket that usually warmed the seat lay across the tabletop, its plush folds touching the cool inkstone. She drew the blanket aside, and its fibres left a faint static whisper in the quiet room. That whisper lingered while she lifted the ink stick and tilted the water dropper toward the stone. Outside, a single thrush answered itself twice, the echo sliding through the open window and slipping beneath the suspended brushes.

The first circling of stick on stone produced a dry rasp; she slowed, letting water bead and gambol across the shallow well before merging with the growing pool. Ink dark as lacquer spread under her thumb, yet it thickened quickly, clinging to the stick like syrup instead of flowing toward the centre. She added another drop, testing thickness by drawing a line of black on spare paper, and the stroke sat high, refusing to sink into the fibres. Pressure alone would normally tame such stubbornness, but each heavier grind warmed the stick, threatening to muddy the scent that signalled freshness. Her wrist practiced quiet diplomacy, alternating speed and angle, bargaining for a balance between warmth and viscosity rather than forcing either extreme.

When she finally dipped the brush, the blanket’s corner slipped back over the table, grazing the damp practice sheet and leaving a faint ridge along its edge. The paper curled where fleece met moisture, and the loaded hairs paused above the ripple. Any stroke across that rise would burst sideways, carefully drowning the serif she intended. She nudged the blanket again, yet fresh folds intertwined and tugged the sheet back as if echoing the small twitch in her ankle. Fixing the curl meant letting ink thicken; saving the ink meant accepting the ridge. Fraser lingered in the doorway, saying, "Another sheet waits on the rack," and left the offer floating.

She breathed against the ink’s surface, watching a single bubble expand, then she chose the compromise. Gently, she pressed the curled edge flat with her free palm, holding it until the paper cooled under her skin. Waiting let the ink inside the brush settle; it no longer slid like water, instead moved as syrup eager to cling. She shortened her planned character, omitting the lower flourish, and lowered the brush in a slower descent than the earlier test line. Ink met fibre with a muted tick, spread just far enough, and the studio’s quiet folded back around her like the blanket now resting loosely across her knees.
