English 원문
Every check began with Hedy easing the peephole cover, yet today the cone inside nodded the moment her hand brushed the damper. Action and answer touched like gear teeth: a half-inch slide, a brighter orange, a softer bend. Leander held his place at her shoulder, breath catching a little in the dry warmth that pressed his forearms. A spare cone rested on the brick ledge by the slit, chalk-dull and cool against his fingertip when he balanced it. Beyond the shed, the brae climbed toward a wire fence, its grass unmoving in the noon glare. Beside the firebox apron, a water barrel stood with a dark rim, the iron hoop cold under a passing palm.
Hedy fed the damper in small increments, then drew a log from the pile, its bark flaking grit into Leander’s wrist. "It’s steady in there," Hedy said, her gaze on the glow rather than on him. Leander stacked a second log onto her waiting forearm, the weight settling hard before he let his fingers release. Another feed disappeared; orange stayed orange; the cone inside seemed unchanged when they checked again after a measured pause. A tile on the bench showed a painted quetzal along its rim, the tail drafted in charcoal lines under chalky slip. The dome itself, a descendant of hillside kilns that tunneled into earth, held its breath and gave back no answer.
Leander lifted the spare cone again and rolled it between thumb and index, the powdery point leaving a pale mark. He opened his mouth for a question, closed it, and chose the log with the smoother end to rest against her sleeve. Ash puffed at his shoe, lifted by his step and then falling level, the ground refusing all footprints within minutes. In went more wood, scrolled like slow wheels; the orange held; the small cone kept its angle as though thinking. Then, without any flare or hiss, the tip loosened and dropped, a tiny bow that would not rise. Hedy kept the damper still; inside, the heat had crossed its line, and the cone bowed in plain view. "There it goes," Hedy said quietly, shoulders staying level as the tip leaned and held.
He tilted the spare cone toward the slit and traced its angled base with a thumb, mapping the notch that trips when this heat soaks long enough. A row of spares on the ledge held their quiet wisdom in plain sight, each one designed to sink only after patience had been spent. Wind flicked the rack and left it, and a small ring formed on the barrel where a drip struck and flattened. Leander glanced at the brae’s slope beyond the shed, then chose the shorter log, coarser to grip yet easier to stack in rhythm. The painted quetzal kept its chalk under his palm on the bench, waiting its turn for the dome that now glowed whiter. He set the spare cone, now slightly warm, back on the brick ledge beside the peephole, carefully.
